SoundPress.net CD Review
![]() In the fall of 2009, Progression magazine featured Syzygy as "The Best prog band you've never heard". The praise for the Ohio-based Syzygy is deserved. Their music blends the best of 70's progressive with their own unique innovations. Syzygy's sound is classic yet contemporary. Their expansive epics feature fine musicianship along with crisp and clean production - laying the foundation for their third full-length release, Realms of Eternity. The music of Syzxgy is almost an amalgam of many of the best-known prog bands out there. With this disc there is a near synchronicity of sound and a synergistic fusing of style as though acts like Yes, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Kansas, early Styx and Glass Harp were all sitting in on the sessions at once. Yet, the Syzygy sound is ultimately satisfying and all-their own. Still, this album would serve as a good introduction to the vastly differing styles, themes and techniques that classic prog rock music is known for - all found right here in one place. Realms of Eternity is artfully arranged and flows through many complex and compelling compositions. The band sets expectations high with the opening track and then deliver for the next 77 minutes. "Darkfield" is daring and dramatic with its many diverse musical digressions. "Vanitas" is vibrant in its variations and demonstrates that Syzygy is versed in prog. "Dreams" is dreamy with it's spacious sequences exploring spectrums of scales and sounds. "Echoes Remain" is effervescent and elegant and followed by the reflective to rocking ""Dialectic". The second half of the CD (The Sea) flows on visual lyrics and vivid instrumentation. Like the sea the songs run the gamut from serene to stormy. Realms of Eternity is 77 minutes of musical bliss!
