A SoundPress.net CD Review
![]() Jonny Lang is like a fine wine that improves with age. In the mid 1990's, Jonny emerged - a vibrant, young guitarist and vocalist who embodied the spirit of a vintage blues man. As a teen, Lang was a precise and passionate player and with time he has only refined his sound. Jonny's music spans a wide range from blues to soul and in 2006 he won a Grammy for Best Rock Gospel Album. Live at the Ryman was recorded in the summer of 2008 and is a career spanning 12-track CD. Lang and his talented team performed an engaging set packed with emotion and energy. The show opens with "One Person at a Time", which blends old school rock and blues with a hopeful hook line. Its followed by "Bump In The Road" and "Turn Around" - both spiritual songs that showcased soulful singing and solos. Other standouts included "A Quitter Never Wins" - a slow simmering staple in Lang's live shows. "Don't Stop (For Anything)" was forceful like the fright train it mentions - moving on thick rhythms and racing riffs. "Lie To Me" is still lush - closing the set and the CD on a sizzling note.
