A SoundPress.net CD Review
![]()
Melissa Etheridge is a daring and distinctive musician and storyteller. Since her debut in the mid 80's Melissa has been a saucy and outspoken artist and activist. After high school, Etheridge studied at the Berklee College of Music before moving to Los Angeles in 1982. She was hired by A&M Records as a songwriter and later got a deal with Island Records. In 2010, Melissa released Fearless Love - her tenth studio album. The twelve-track CD runs the gamut from reflective muses to rockers about heartache and hope. The records opens with the single and title track. It is an up-tempo piece peppered with modern musical influences. It is followed by "The Wanting of You" a visual and vivid tale about loyalty and lust. "Company" incorporates classic rock tones with pensive yet potent prose. "Miss California" is caustic lyrically and cutting with its instrumentation. "Drag Me Away" is dramatic while "Indiana" features solid storytelling about a small town girl who achieves success in the big city. "Nervous" is gritty countered by the encouraging "Heaven On Earth". "We Are The Ones" blends world tones with a bold call to build a better world. "Only Love" is meditative and melodic. "To Be Love" builds up on a slow sizzle. "Gently We Row" melds subtle instrumentation and singing as the song flows on the analogy of a slow river. Fearless Love demonstrates that Melissa Etheridge is still fearless and formative when penning songs about life, passion and pain.
