A SoundPress.net CD Review
![]()
Walter Trout is a seasoned composer, guitarist and singer. Walter is a roots rocker who blends blues, country and all out jams into perceptive and personal songs. Common Ground is Trout's 20th album featuring serious storytelling and sizzling guitar solos. Walter and his band (Kenny Aronoff-drums, Hutch Hutchinson-bass and Jon Cleary-keys) are skilled players who bring passion and precision to this twelve-track CD. The record opens with "May Be A Fool" - a foot tapping jest with grit. "Open Book" is a melodic muse using a book as a metaphor for life. "Her Other Man" is the story of straying punctuated by sultry guitar licks. The title track is a heartfelt hymn hoping for better days and folks finding "Common Ground". "Danger Zone" combines insightful lyrics with intense leads. "Hudson Had Help" is storytelling with a down home flavor. "Loaded Gun" is loaded with fast licks and smoking rhythms and is followed by the slower and sweet ode to Walter's axe, "Song for My Guitar". "Eyes Of A Child" combines beguiling blues with B3 and runs into the rhythm heavy "No Regrets". "Wrapped Up In The Blues" and "Excess Baggage" expand upon the blues with intense guitar licks and intricate instrumentation. Common Ground is a versatile and vibrant record by a seasoned musician.
