A SoundPress.net CD Review
![]()
Stratovarius is a Finnish power metal band that mixes elements of classical, metal, progressive, rock and symphonic in complex and compelling compositions. The group formed in 1984 and has seen its share of changes but musicianship has remained a constant. Infinite-Special Edition is a two disk set recently re-released by the band. The first CD features nine tracks that range from daunting to delicate melding metal with melody. The second CD showcases demo tracks and live versions of four of the songs from the first disk plus three other tunes. "Why Are We Here" rocks hard while "It's A Mystery" is a potion of pulsing riffs and rhythms with probing prose. "Neon Light Child" is a melancholy muse from a lonely adult who was abandoned as a child. Disk one opens with "Hunting High and Low" which creatively blends progressive with a catchy chorus. "Millennium" carries a message at a manic pace. "Mother Gaia" is a slower but bold ballad regarding the state of the Earth. "Phoenix" rises on energized instrumentation and a proclamation that nothing can stop the narrator. "Glory Of The World" gallops at a rapid pace through lots of complex changes. "A Million Light Years Away" is lavish and layered. It's followed by the frenzy of "Freedom". "Infinity" runs the gamut from haunting to heavy with the disk closing with the dream-like "Celestial Dream". Info: -- FINLAND 2010: www.stratovarius.com (Laura Turner Lynch/Kweevak.com) |
