Black Country Communion Convenes and Conjures Up a Hit!

Black Country Communion is a glorious union of great players who might ascend higher into the realms of rock godness on the strenghth of their self-titled debut release. As producer Kevin Shirley said on the bonus DVD included in the two-disc package Black Country Communion is not a Supergroup, but, they are a super group.

Featuring Deep Purple's Glenn Hughes on bass and lead vox, Joe Bonamassa on guitar and vocals, Derek Sherinian on keyboards, and Jason Bohnam on drums - the four horses that drive this group are seasoned veteran musicians that may not be everyday household names. However, this grouping of talent was one of the most anticipated projects of the year and it doesn't disappoint.

Make no mistake - Black Country Communion is an attempt to create a brand and a band - a la the tasty offering that was Chickenfoot from a few years back. Powered by the guitarist and revered blues aficionado Joe Bonammasa and the strong rock lineage and power drumming provided by Bonham - there is much promise for the continuation of the Communion in the future. Derek Sherinian of Dream Theater fame rounds out the unit with ample keyboards and B3 organ to add an authentic classic rock feel.

Glenn Hughes was not the most famous singer in Deep Purple but he was loved by many ardent fans for the good work he did in the years he held the throne. His presence is felt early on the opener "Black Country" with its pulsating bass line navigating the tour of Hughes' and Bonham's homeland that gives the band their name. Glenn provides more throttling vocals on the next track - "One Last Soul".

Fans of rising guitarist Bonamassa will find his dramatic and dynamic licks abound on the disc and he takes over the lead vocal role on "Song Of Yesterday" and "The Revolution In Me". Joe and Hughes share vocals and turn up the heat on the AC/DC influenced hard rocker "Sista Jane". They also trade vocals on the musically extended closer "Too Late For The Sun".

Born out of the heritage of blues, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple - this album was written and recorded, and some would say - rushed, in only four days earlier in the year. But, the end product was a chart topping CD firmly stamping BCC as a band - and a brand. It'll be interesting to see what the gods come up with the next time they commune!
