SWEET - NEW YORK CONNECTION
A SoundPress.net CD Review

This Collection of Unique and Obscure Covers Sounds Sweet!

Sweet were a staple in the seventies best known for their confectionery-laced pop classic "Fox On The Run" and the more thought provoking "Love Is Like Oxygen". All in all, the British pioneers of the glam-rock movement sold more than 55 million albums worldwide on the strength of numerous chart toppers.

Now, Andy Scott - a founding member and one fourth of the legendary lineup - has returned with a new version of the band and a tribute to the mighty metropolis of Manhattan and the musicians that hailed from its environs.

New York Connection is a fine collection that opens with the inspired mash-up of Ace Frehley's "New York Groove" and "Empire State of Mind" by Jay-Z. This track sets the tone and reveals that this version of Sweet has found a modern sound that is ready to be molded into some tasty ear treats for its global fan-base.

Among the band's famous adherents are Gene Simmons of KISS, Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue and Joe Elliott of Def Leppard. All three of these multi-platinum recording artists point to the infectious work of the band as being influential and instrumental to their success. Now, a new generation of listeners can get a taste of the Sweet legend on the album's 10 covers and the title track - a remake of an original Sweet B-side.

A dizzying take on Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me Round" is the most surprising track that reforms a quirky pop number into a piece of sweet hard rock candy with some tasty licks. A flashy rendering of "On Broadway" pays homage the to city's most famous thoroughfare that has seen it's fair share of change since the band's heyday in the 70's.

Other songs that are particularly effective include "Shape Of Things" by Cream that explodes with power chords and sweetesque harmonies. Durable and delectable versions of "Sweet Jane" by the Velvet Underground and "Blitzkrieg Bop" by The Ramones add a dose of authentic New York character to the mix.

The album closes together with the bouncy and effective "Join Together" by The Who and serves as a call for fans old and new to jump aboard the Sweet bus for a memorable and musical trip through the streets of New York.
