A SoundPress.net CD Review
![]()
Joe Lynn Turner is the unmistakable voice of the 80's era hard rock powerhouse Rainbow - and while they may be over - JLT has remained in search of that sonically pleasing pot of rock and roll gold. Turner powered Rainbow onto the A.O.R. rock charts in the 1980's and helped transform the band from cult classic with mostly adolescent male fans into a crossover favorite on the strength of his good looks and golden vocal chops. But, his tenure in Rainbow would be short lived as that band's founder Ritchie Blackmore shelved the project for a return to his more popular outpost in Deep Purple. So, Turner was left to fend for himself and soon began a prolific solo career marked by forays into several other recording projects with the likes of Yngwie Malmsteen and Glenn Hughes to name just a few. In 2006, Turner began distributing music under the Sunstorm name. This outfit has been widely recognized as a return to form for the singer and has quickly became a favorite amongst his fans. In 2012, Sunstorm released their third album called Emotional Fire on Frontier Records. This 11-track record is a volume of selections chosen specifically by the label and features a mix of new and old songs. The material from the back catalogue includes pieces Turner originally wrote (and sang backup on) for artists like Michael Bolton and Cher, and the new songs are written by modern melodic rock veterans like Tom and James Martin (Vega,Khymera), Soren Kronkvist (Issa) and Daniel Palmqvist (Xorigin). On Emotional Fire the veteran singer is once again paired with bassist/producer Dennis Ward (Pink Cream 69) and together they have put together a fine collection of high-class melodic rock songs that at times smolder with feeling or flare with intense heat. Many of the tunes convey a hopeful optimism that has been a signature in Joe's solo work. Highlights include the opener "Never Give Up" which storms out of the gate as an anthem for going after your dreams. Powered by a solid rhythm section and a vibrant guitar hook, this song is a positive blueprint for keeping the faith in the face of life's struggles. "You Wouldn't Know Love" is one of the Michael Bolton tunes on the album that offers a biting commentary on a relationship gone band with a Whitesnakey groove that really grabs. "The Higher You Rise" is a powerful rocker with an important message that dreams attained can often become burdensome and accompanied by a fall from grace. However, as true as that may be Sunstorm advises their listeners to continue to "Follow Your Heart". This uplifting track reminds fans to believe in themselves and their goals to change the world around for the better. It's good to see that Joe Lynn Turner has found a suitable outfit for his amazing singing abilities. To get there - he's had to get over the rainbow - and set his sites even higher with Sunstorm. We can't wait for his next musical blast to come our way. Info: -- USA/NJ: www.joelynnturner.com (Richard J. Lynch/SoundPress.net) |
