SAGA - 20/20
A SoundPress.net CD Review

The SAGA Continues With Just a Little Hindsight on 20/20!

SAGA - the rock quintet from Ontario, Canada - achieved success in the States in the early 80's on the strength of their video for "On The Loose" from the Worlds Apart record. In 2012, the band is ready to let loose again with their twentieth studio album, 20/20.

Opening with a bass-synth progression "Six Feet Under" sets the tone for the rest of the songs on the disc. SAGA's musical style is defined by prominent guitar riffs, often in conjunction with synthesizers and complex keyboard arrangements - and all that remains intact provided by the four-fifths of the members who powered their classic lineup.

20/20 marks the return of the band's original lead singer and keyboardist Michael Sadler to the fold and his dramatic presentation brings to mind the works of bands like Styx, Queen, and the solo music from Cy Curnin. Big harmonies and ethereal vibes veer in and out of the ten tracks on the album - often punctuated by bold guitar leads and powered by a proven rhythm section.

On "Anywhere You Wanna Go" the distinctive trademark SAGA sound kicks in revealing that the group is content to stick to their tried and true formula with an upgraded modern sound. The song moves forward on an intoxicating hook and a powerful chorus that rides above layered keys and six-string - leading to an ultimately satisfying destination.

The closing track "Till The Well Runs Dry" comes closest to generating the excitement of the band's biggest hit, "Turn Me Loose". Overall, 20/20 is a return to form for SAGA and proves that the group still has got some juice in the tank with the likelihood that we'll be seeing and hearing more from them again in the future.
