A SoundPress.net CD Review
![]()
Jars of Clay are a Christian rock band that has enjoyed crossover success since their establishment back in 1995 with the hit song "Flood". Their music melds acoustic, alternative, folk, R&B and rock. In 2012, the group is still touring in support of The Shelter which was released in October of 2010. "We wanted to make a record about community, and we wanted the recording process to be community. We wanted it to be an expression of what it was trying to articulate from a concept standpoint," said guitarist Matthew Odmark in his remarks about The Shelter. The band worked with songwriters that they respected, such as Laura Story, Thad Cockrell and Phillip LaRue who added their own spin to songs that Jars of Clay had been working on for more than a year. In addition, the group reached out and tapped into long-established, readily recognizable voices, like those of Mac Powell, Amy Grant, Brandon Heath, Leigh Nash, TobyMac and more, who added timbre and texture to Jars of Clay's signature sound. The eleven-track CD is built on a strong foundation of layered and varied vocal blends. The lyrics are structured around stories of hardships, hopes and battles of faith. The Shelter is rooted in catchy harmonies and hooks in compositions that are compelling. The sound of the record is grounded in rock and fortified by the use of other instruments such as bells and strings. The CD opens with the rousing "Small Rebellions" an up-tempo summons to be kind and a reminder that we all have value. "Call My Name" builds on that momentum with a melodic command to the singer and listeners to follow God's call. Bells, beats and the refrain "We Will Follow" are the foundations of this faith based song. "Eyes Wide Open" counters that sentiment describing a struggle to believe. The title track is fixed around a slower tempo swirling around a harmonious hook. "Out of My Hands" is a plaintive piece about not living in the light but stating that God's love still shines. The last four tracks stick to the blue print of blending varied instruments and vocals in vibrant songs of faith. The Shelter is a well constructed record based on collaborations, community and solid musicianship. Info: -- USA/TN: www.jarsofclay.com (Laura Turner Lynch/SoundPress.net) |
