A Kweevak.com DVD Review
![]() What gave The Doors an edge over the other innovative bands that emerged from the cultural revolution of the 1960's? Was it the unique jazz influenced patterns from drummer John Densmore? Perhaps it was the cryptic and carnival like keys crafted by Ray Manzarek. Or was it Robbie Krieger's unique guitar grooves mixing leads and rhythms? It was this combination allied with a charismatic singer named Jim Morrison that led to gold record success in a short period of time. The Doors released their first studio album in 1967 and the last in 1971. The legend and lore of The Doors is well documented in When You're Strange. The movie looks at the six studio records that ranged from psychedelic, rock, jazz and blues. The film is narrated by Johnny Depp who brings the right blend of darkness and drama to the storytelling. The DVD also includes conversations with Jim's father and sister. The movie starts with backwards snapshots of The Doors' career and some 60's history. The film included lots of concert clips, their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show and commentary from band members. The story unfolds through each album and charts the highs and lows of The Doors. It paints Morrison as a poet who crafted a public persona to provoke people. This image ultimately became bigger than life. Whereas John, Ray and Robbie turned to meditation - Jim chose drink and drugs - eventually leading to his distancing from the group and his own self destruction. The legacy of The Doors lives though their music and When You're Strange encapsulates a compelling chapter in rock history. Info: -- USA/NY 2010: Order DVD (Laura Turner Lynch/Kweevak.com) |
