A Kweevak.com DVD Review
![]()
Inspired and following The Beatles a few years later, Black Sabbath perfected their chops in the clubs of Germany. The fearsome foursome returned to the United Kingdom to record Paranoid. And like The Fab Four, Black Sabbath would herald a new and now darker age in music. They countered flower power with scary songs of the real world & politics ("War Pigs") and psychology ("Paranoid"). Black Sabbath blended blues and hard rock with elements of the occult and the resulting brew were compositions that were both daring and dense. Black Sabbath defined the riffs, rhythms and vibe that would become heavy metal music. Classic Albums - Paranoid presents the processes and inspirations behind the chart topping record. The DVD includes interviews, musical demonstrations and historic footage from the original four band members (Ozzy Osbourne - vocals, Tony Iommi - guitars, Geezer Butler - bass, Bill Ward - drums) and engineer Tom Allom. Tony was engaging as he discussed and dissected leads demonstrating how they evolved into songs. Ozzy was amusing and the others shared interesting insights too. We learned that much of the album was played live in the studio with few enhancements, thus giving it a raw feel that has stood the test of time. The DVD also includes 40 minutes of additional features all of which gives one a greater appreciation of how important Paranoid and Black Sabbath are to the genre of metal.
