A Kweevak.com DVD Review
![]()
Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP) were an English trio of players with impressive credentials and their collaboration in the 1970's was extravagant and experimental. Emerson (keys/organ), Lake (bass/guitar/vox) and Palmer (drums/percussion) were heavily influenced by classical, jazz and rock. They incorporated all of these elements into songs that ranged from progressive to pop. Pictures At An Exhibition-Special Edition (Eagle Rock Entertainment) showcases the band at a pinnacle point with a concert at The Lyceum (London) filmed December 9th, 1970. The album and live presentation of Pictures At An Exhibition was based on the Mussorgsky 19th Century classical piece. The music was challenging and complex. The first of the two DVDs captures the interpretation with concert clips blended with seventies psychedelic special effects. The trio were innovative individually and even more so collectively. It was amazing to watch the power of Palmer, the lavishness of Lake and the electrifying Emerson pulling unheard of sounds from a piano and organ. The second disk features the Pop Shop performance also from 1970. The disk includes brief interviews with ELP and a portion of the concert. Fans can enjoy the antics of Keith Emerson who was animated in his movements and music. Emerson conjured incredible effects from his instruments by leaning them at strange angles along with other technical tricks. Carl Palmer was a dynamic drummer and his solos were daunting. Lake is more subtle yet stellar on bass, guitar and vocals. Disk two includes "Rondo", Nutrocker", "Take A Pebble" and "Knife Edge". Pictures At An Exhibition - Special Edition displays ELP at a high point and is a prime illustration of theatrical rock. Info: -- USA/NY 2010: Order DVD (Laura Turner Lynch/Kweevak.com) |
