A Kweevak.com DVD Review
![]()
The Bee Gees (Barry Gibb - rhythm guitar, bass & vox; Robin Gibb - vox; and, Maurice Gibb- rhythm & electric guitars, bass & vox) have had a long and legendary run as one of the most popular pop-rock groups of all time. They are best known for their incredible blend of harmonies. The Bee Gees In Our Own Time (Eagle Rock Entertainment) is a compelling and comprehensive look at the band's career. The DVD is a compilation of interviews, concert clips and stories as told by the Gibb brothers. The DVD opens with a live show from the 70's complete with flashing floor and lights capturing the essence of the Bee Gee's disco period. But as the DVD unfolds, we learn that the brothers have traveled a wide range of musical terrains. At a young age, the Gibbs were singing and recording albums in Australia with some success. When the Beatles came along the Bee Gees yearned for fame on a bigger scale so off to England they went. They worked as songwriters and musicians for a time until "Massachusetts" hit number one on the UK charts followed by international recognition with appearances on the Carson and Ed Sullivan shows. In the early 70's, the Bee Gees incorporated R&B into their sound and did well with the track "Jive Talkin" but the decade would be theirs with the songs they penned for the film Saturday Night Fever. The album and movie were enormously successful. Yet, the death of their younger brother Andy - also a musician - and Maurice's drinking problem would cast a dark cloud upon them. They prevailed and the Bee Gees changed direction once again by focusing on writing songs for the likes of Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion and later recording more records as a group. The Bee Gees In Our Own Time includes interviews with Barry and Robin after the un-timely death of Maurice. The DVD closes with the two remaining brothers singing their classics for the camera with the possibility that they may choose to carry on their legacy.
