A Kweevak.com DVD Review
![]()
Since his days with The Yardbirds back in the 60's, guitarist Jeff Beck has been considered one of the greats. Many of his recordings have been instrumentals with a focus on innovations and jams incorporating a wide range of influences including blues, fusion, jazz, metal and rock. Beck's most recent project was an event and the subsequent release of Jeff Beck Rock 'n' Rock Party Honoring Les Paul (Eagle Rock Entertainment). This one-off concert recorded and filmed on June 9, 2010 at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York City was a tribute to Les Paul who would have turned 95 on that day. The 27 song set featured the music of Les Paul and a generous dose of rockabilly. The DVD opens with scenes of setting up, the streets of New York and shots of the audience with a number of rock stars such as David Bowie, Meat Loaf, Kirk Hammett and two E Streeters in attendance. Joining Jeff for this celebration was rockabilly songstress Imelda May and her band. Imelda has a passion and presence for this blend of old school rock and jazz that ranged from sassy to sentimental. Highlights of the set were "How High The Moon", the dreamy "Vaya Con Dios", the whimsical "Mockin' Bird Hill", the tantalizing "Tiger Rag" and the passionate "Walking In The Sand". Additional special guests were Trombone Shorty on the horn heavy "Peter Gunn". Jeff added rich riffs to punctuate the familiar patterns of the piece that was followed by the up-tempo "Rocking Is Our Business". Vocalist Gary U.S Bond encouraged the crowd to clap and sing along to "New Orleans" and Brian Setzer added his spin to the energized "Twenty Flight Rock" and "Shake Rattle & Roll". In addition to a captivating concert the DVD features interesting bonus material including an interview with Beck, Behind The Scenes and At Home with Jeff Beck and his Guitars where he shares some musical history about himself and others. The last two items are live clips of Billy Squier with Jeff Beck jamming with Les Paul in the 80's. Les is greeted warmly by the auidence before demonstrating his Little Black Box showing how he could create an orchestra with just his guitar and his device that recorded sounds to allow layering. Jeff Beck Rock 'n' Rock Party Honoring Les Paul showcases a classic style of music performed by a talented team of players and engaging extras making this a complete package. Jeff will be touring in support of this project in March and April of 2011 with some dates with the Imelda May Band. Info: -- UK 2011: www.jeffbeck.com (Laura Turner Lynch/Kweevak.com) |
