- Variety Ride, Rise, Roar (Eagle Rock Entertainment) was filmed in 2008 and 2009 during the "Songs of David Byrne & Brian Eno" tour. It is an artistic documentary that alternates between black and white behind the scenes clips and full color concert footage. David Byrne known for his work in the Talking Heads has been a showman since the new wave band's early days in which multi-media was part of their live performances. In Ride, Rise, Roar, David is fronting a talented team of dancers and musicians who are all clad in white. The set list is a satisfying mix of newer material and re-worked Talking Heads classics such as "Once in a Lifetime", "Burning Down The House" and "Life During Wartime." The music spans a wide gamut of styles ranging from funk, pop, rock, soul and world. The live shows were well choreographed with strange dance sequences that were intriguing with Byrne adding his own steps to the mix. David was in good form both physically and vocally. The exotic presentations were engaging and energizing. The behind the scenes clips were interesting as they shared the insights behind the music plus interviews with Byrne, his band, Eno and the different choreographers. Other highlights included "My Big Nurse" with its country flair enhanced by lots of acoustic guitars, "Air" with the dance troop using guitars as props and David playing some rousing riffs on the electric and "I Feel My Stuff" with its blend of perplexing dancing, effects and phrasing. Ride, Rise, Roar was theatrical demonstrating that Byrne is still very much a showman! Info: -- USA/NY 2011: www.davidbyrne.com (Laura Turner Lynch/SoundPress.net) |
