Bring the Bayou to Broadway A SoundPress.net Feature Article by Rich and Laura Lynch As Fleet Week sailed into New York City the Neville Brothers from New Orleans brought their patented brand of buoyant bayou-infused funk, gospel, and R&B to the party in midtown. They proceeded to play an hour and forty-five minute set that ebbed and flowed on waves of rhythm and crests of soul proving that their musical vessel fit right in with the powerful theme of the annual celebration.
![]() The Neville Brothers - Charles and Aaron. The Neville Brothers (Aaron - vocals; Art - keys; Charles - sax; & , Cyril - percussion) were founded in 1977. They are a vibrant and versatile band whose musical blend is as tasty and eclectic as the gumbo their home state is known for. We had the pleasure of seeing The Neville Brothers perform in February of 2010. When we discovered that they were playing at the Nokia Theater in New York City on May 27th, 2010 we anticipated another captivating concert. In the wintertime, Cyril was on tour with Tribe 13 but he was present on this occasion adding a different dynamic to the show. Cyril, the youngest Neville, was positioned stage right behind his percussion kit. He shared vocal responsibilities with his sibling Aaron throughout the night. The Neville Brothers brought the Bayou to Broadway with a varied mix of covers and originals that had a New Orleans flair. Only a few words were spoken between songs but a blessing was given to the fans to close out the show. Drums and percussion propelled the first piece. Cyril handled lead vocals layered with funky guitar grooves and rhythms. The second song was also heavy on percussion that was so well mixed that you could hear each distinct instrument. Harmonies and heavy beats added to the jam.

The set list combined up-tempo tracks with slower songs including the familial "Brother Jake" and the fervent "Fever" that featured a sexy sax solo from Charles. "Voo Doo" was a magical mix of instrumentation and vocals with Art's cryptic keys rising from the depths to the surface of the song. Like the Iwo Jima battleship that was docked next to the Intrepid on the Hudson River on 12th Avenue the Neville Brothers brought their own fire power to the city. "Fire on the Bayou" smoldered and burned with double drums that sounded like the aggressive thunder the boats above are known to make from time to time. "A Change is Gonna Come" soared on Aaron's soulful vocals that seamlessly flowed from high to low notes and was enhanced by Charles' sweet sax solo. It was followed by the peppy "Iko Iko" that had people in the GA section swaying. "Yellow Moon" was melodic and moody and concluded with a frenzied instrumental finish. At the end of the evening Cyril moved from behind his drums to the front of the stage - injecting even more energy and power into the band's already impressive arsenal of musical maneuvers. Cyril was the de facto frontman for the moment and he encouraged the crowd to clap along. The Neville Brothers played an engaging and energetic set with danceable jams and sentimental songs that covered a range of genres. The set closed with a medley of spiritual songs. "Amazing Grace" was gripping as it moved into their groovy interpretation of Bob Marley's "One Love/People Get Ready" thus ending the night on a high note and sending the patrons home floating on the encore's positive vibes.
