Jamming at the New Jersey Botanical Gardens in Ringwood, New Jersey A SoundPress.net Feature Article by Rich and Laura Lynch No Discipline was founded by brothers Al (lead guitar & vox) and Mike Bazaz (rhythm guitar & vox) in 1983. The core is joined by rotating musicians on bass, drums, guitar and percussion. No Discipline draws heavily from the sounds of the Caribbean. Their lively live shows are a mix of covers and originals.
![]() On June 11, 2010 No Discipline kicked off the New Jersey Botanical Garden's (NJBG) concert series on a spirited note. The Gardens were a great setting for a show. Fans set up chairs and blankets on the lawn, which was surrounded by pines and shrubs. Children had plenty of room to dance and play. For over an hour No Discipline performed an up-tempo set that included two songs off their latest original CD. They opened with Bob Marley's "Stir It Up" which was a satisfying mix of sassy guitar licks and spunky rhythms. No Discipline added flair to Jimmy Buffett's "I Don't Know and I Don't Care" with bouncy beats and jamming. Back to Bob with a lilting version of "Three Little Birds" followed by a reggaeized "Don't Stop" by Fleetwood Mac, which was interesting with its perky paces and phrasing. No Discipline put their own spirit into Buffett's "Margaritaville" before playing the funky and feisty "Lethal Weapon" from their new album.
![]() "Jamming" included a jam and a few other subtle changes to the Marley classic. The band played a number of Soca style songs with bold beats and a bit more Bob before closing the show with "Can't Help Falling In Love". The reggaeized version of this Elvis classic was more up-tempo than the original yet still true to form. No Discipline was engaging and energizing and the Gardens are a laid back and lovely place to see live music. In addition to concerts the NJBG features elegant formal gardens and wooded paths. Throughout the spring, summer and fall there is always something blooming at the Gardens. In late April it's the lilac grove, May there are wild flowers and rhododendrons and in the summer there are plenty of new plants on display. The fall brings autumn colors and mums.
