Latest CD Sundown Till Dawn Finds Artist Rising on Bright Folk A SoundPress.net Feature Article by Rich and Laura Lynch On June 19, 2010 local folk musician Loretta Hagen was the featured performer at the Ringwood Farmer's Market in Passaic County, New Jersey. The artist played a 2-hour set that featured tracks from her latest Sundown Till Dawn CD and more originals from her back catalogue.
![]() Loretta Hagen grew up in a musical household, which sparked her initial interest in music. For a number of years, Loretta and her collaborator Gary Hagen lived in and absorbed Nashville. Now based in New Jersey, Loretta continues to compose and perform locally. Sundown Till Dawn is Hagen's most recent CD and features various artists and a dozen heartfelt tracks. The song structures are straight forward dealing with everyday events and challenges twanged with county textures and tones. The CD opens with "Gotta Build My House" an up-beat hopefully tune about erecting a house that may also be a metaphor for building ones life. It is followed by "Hello Mountain" with its inspirational prose about drawing strength from nature. "You'll Get There Faster" looks at time with a subtle message to embrace life. "School Bus Driver" is written from the perspective of the driver emphasizing the importance of the job. "Sundown Till Dawn" is a touching tune penned for Loretta's mother who has Alzheimer's disease. It is her most personal recording to date and the song has been included on the soundtrack to 10 Mountains 10 Years - an award-winning documentary feature film that chronicles Enzo Simone and his international team of mountain climbers, The Regulars, as they scale 10 of the greatest peaks in the world to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease. Also featured in the film is a track by Bruce Springsteen - a long-time supporter of the cause with his regular appearances at "Light of Day" concerts on the Jersey shore. After her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease seven years ago, Loretta and her family became round the clock caregivers in their mom's home, dealing with the changes and challenges that come with such a terrible disease. For Loretta and her family, it's been an emotional roller coaster, and her song paints a clear picture of how her mom has suffered. Loretta's hopes are that her song will help to raise awareness and funding for research, so that others will one day be spared the suffering these diseases inflict. The CD continues with the pensive and pretty "Day". "Mirror Mirror" is a melodic muse running into the timeless "Longing For Home". "Mighty Winter" is a whimsical look at the seasons sung from winter's standpoint. "Bits and Pieces" is a ballad of a broken love countered by the peppy "Mama Light A Candle" with a hope that a new marriage will work out. "You've Got Hurtin' Me Down To A Science" is - as the title implies - a tale about a bad relationship and the CD closer. Hagen is an artist who plays and writes songs from the heart. Loretta's blend of country, folk and rock works well as the backdrop to her words. As an artist on the rise - she is well represented on Sundown Till Dawn. The Ringwood Farmers' Market is held every Saturday from late May to the end of October at the Ringwood Park & Ride from 9 AM to 1 PM. Each weekly event features a variety of talent from the region. Rain or Shine and don't forget to bring your reusable bag!
