New Album and Tour Points Pop Star in Colorful New Direction A SoundPress.net Feature Article by Rich and Laura Lynch With a debut album suitably entitled She's So Unusual Cyndi Lauper made a personal and musical statement when it was released in 1983. That record earned Cyndi a Grammy for Best New Artist and five top ten singles. This singer, songwriter and actress from Queens, New York has continued to achieve success and in 2010 Lauper released Memphis Blues. The CD features eleven blues covers and includes an illustrious list of guest musicians including Jonny Lang and B.B. King.
![]() Signed copies of Lauper's new Memphis Blues - like the one shown above - were a hot seller in Englewood! Cyndi Lauper appeared at the BergenPAC in Englewood, New Jersey on June 27, 2010 with her six-piece band and the early focus of the show was on the recent release - with the first eight songs played coming in near exact album order. "The thing about the blues is in its best moments, it's hopefully uplifting," stated Cyndi. This theme prevailed through the opening set of music that Lauper and her seasoned group performed. "Just Your Fool" - the first song of the concert and CD was sassy with Lauper strutting around the stage in a dark lacy outfit and red hair. During "Shattered Dreams" Cyndi's vocalizations were vibrant as she went out into the audience encouraging the crowd to clap along as she held long notes. After returning to the stage with lots of thank yous and greetings, Cyndi mentioned that it took eight years to get around to making Memphis Blues which segued into band introductions and a steamy version of "Early In The Morning". The men contributed backing vocals with a sizzling solo from Charles "Skip" Pitts on guitar. "Romance In The Dark" was sultry as Lauper proved a laudable siren in the genre. "How Blue Can You Get" featured saucy singing and stalking from Cyndi with the band providing passionate instrumentation. Lauper experienced some problems with her inner ear monitor for the first few songs but the technical difficulties didn't detract too much from the fun. On two occasions the singer entertained the nearly sold-out BergenPAC audience by kicking off her shoes and marching into the crowd - taking the spotlight by standing on an empty seat in the fifth row. "Nothing goes with the blues like Chinese food," jested Lauper about the meal she consumed while conceptualizing her current project. She petitioned people to check out the original versions of the music they were covering. Cyndi put her own pizzazz to Albert King's "Down Don't Bother Me". "Down So Low" was a slower, soulful song with keys floating throughout the song as Cyndi strolled back out into the crowd. At this point, a particularly boisterous adherent belted out "Girls Just Want To Have Fun". Cyndi took her place in front of a slide guitar and continued with the blues playing the edgy "Mother Earth". At the conclusion of the song Lauper and her band abruptly exited the stage seemingly annoyed by the commentary and requests for her greatest hit. "And that concludes the blues set. I just wanted to play what I feel like playing," Lauper remarked upon returning to the stage before starting in with the rarity "Who Let in the Rain" from the Hat Full of Stars album. Folks responded with clapping and dancing. Moving into her pop period Lauper kicked it up a notch with a high-power performance of "Change of Heart" from her second album True Colors as fans started swarming down in front. "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" engaged the entire audience and included extended instrumentation and vocal exchanges. "Time After Time" was also a crowd pleaser. Cyndi closed the set with "Rollin' And Tumblin'" - another new track from Memphis Blues. As the encore started she acknowledged Gay Pride Day as the annual parade had taken place earlier in the day in New York City. She dedicated the brief prelude of "Boy Blue" to a friend before going into a colorful version of "True Colors" with a transition into John Lennon's "Power To The People" before circling back to her song and ending with well wishes for a great summer. Lauper is also an alumni of the TV show The Apprentice. Cyndi learned well from the Donald and was utilizing savvy marketing for her new CD which was flying out the door before and after the show. For a reasonable ten dollars fans could scoop up autographed and personalized version of the album. Cyndi and company will be touring throughout 2010 in support of Memphis Blues.
