Makes a Rare Appearance in Ringwood A SoundPress.net Feature Article by Rich and Laura Lynch On Sunday December 5, 2010, Elliott Murphy and The Normandy All Stars performed a rare show in Ringwood, New Jersey. Murphy generally tours throughout his home-base in Europe, therefore, his six shows in the tri-state area were much anticipated. Fans at the "Live at Drew's" Cupsaw Concert Series enjoyed the additional bonus of an intimate and social setting to experience Elliott and the talented Normandy All Stars from France.
![]() Elliott Murphy - Live at Drew's in Ringwood, New Jersey. Elliott Murphy currently resides in Paris but he was born in America to artistic parents. In 1973, Elliott released his critically-acclaimed first record Aquashow. At the time Murphy - along with other singer-songwriter types like Bruce Springsteen - were often cited as the "New Dylan". There are some stylistic similarities between Murphy and Mr. Zimmerman. Elliott has a comparable tone yet smoother quality to his voice. Murphy, who is also recognized as a novelist - pens poetic lyrics like Dylan. Elliott's set was engaging and energized from start to finish, opening strong with the up-tempo "Gone, Gone, Gone". "A Touch of Mercy" was propelled by rhythms and galvanized by the guitars with all four men singing. "Sonny" was a fine example of Murphy's storytelling and the piece progressed through slow and peppy paces to support the song. The track featured one of many soaring solos from guitarist Olivier Durand. "I never confused myself with Bruce actually. He was from New Jersey. I was from Long Island. What could be clearer?" Murphy jested referring to the comparisons made between the two artists in the 70's, continuing, "We had a summit meeting to split the territory. I said, you play the 60,000 seat arenas, I'll stick with the home concerts." "It's very, very nerve racking for me to play before an audience that understands English," joked Murphy before performing a new song from his forthcoming self-titled 31st album. "Take That Devil Out Of Me" was a reflective tune about faith and love enhanced by exhilarating guitar riffs. "You Don't Need To Be More Then Yourself" another new track looked at life and showcased interesting drum patterns from Alan Fatras. Alan was using a box drum that he sat on along with a cymbal and a tambourine played with his foot to craft surprisingly full sounds. "Take Your Love Away" had the whole crowd clapping along to bold bass lines from Laurent Pardo. The jam got faster and furious with Murphy leading on harmonica for the first time. "You Never Know What You're In For" also had a heavy dose of harp combined with varied tempos and vocal styles. "On Elvis Presley's Birthday" was sung and spoken as Elliot talked about taking a car ride with his Dad who liked Elvis. The song was filled with images and intricate instrumentation. "Diamonds by the Yard" meandered through a variety of musical moods and featured fine mini-solos from the Normandy All Stars. The encore was unplugged with the quartet standing in a circle. Laurent was playing sticks and Alan tambourine. Pretty picking added to the vocals that ranged from whispering to singing on Dylan's "Blind Willie McTell". Drew Eckmann - the host and namesake behind the 'Live at Drew's" Cupsaw Concert Series - had requested "Green River" which flowed on patterns of percussion and passionate guitars. "Drive All Night" ran on spirited singing and instrumentation and ended this rare show on a high note! Murphy thanked the audience and said he thought he got the better deal at the "summit" he mentioned to start the show. Elliott and the Normandy All Stars were then available for pictures and autographs well into the night. Murphy and his band were a powerhouse in this intimate live setting and we hope it won't be long until they make another foray back to these shores.
