Live @ Manchester & Tilburg 2010 A SoundPress.net Feature Article by Rich and Laura Lynch Transatlantic is a prog-rock supergroup that was formed in 1999. The band consists of Neal Morse formerly of Spock's Beard, Mike Portnoy formerly of Dream Theater, Roine Stolt of The Flower Kings and Pete Trewavas of Marillion. Transatlantic was considered a side project for each and they have released three studio records over the course of their history. In addition to the albums, Transatlantic has toured and put out a number of DVDs documenting their lengthy live performances.
![]() The latest offering from Transatlantic is More Never is Enough Live @ Manchester & Tilburg 2010. The 3 CDs and 2 DVDs were recorded in 2010 during the Whirld Tour. On this month long engagement Daniel Gildenlow joined the original quartet to contribute additional keyboards, guitars, vocals and percussion to the band's engaging epics. The audio features the entire Manchester concert and the visual is the three hour plus show in Tilburg that includes The Whirlwind and the "Return of the Giant Hogweed" encore.
![]() Both the CDs and DVDs featured quality sound and showcased the talents of Transatlantic. It is impressive that a group can compose such complex and compelling music and even more amazing when they play it back in a live setting. Transatlantic was at the top of their game in both Manchester and Tilburg. The DVD has a fine mix of camera angles ranging from close ups to pull outs. The first DVD is "The Whirlwind" from start to finish. The 12 part track is multi-layered with plenty of lavish solos including many stand out moments from Stolt. The story and structure of the song runs the gamut from daunting to delicate culminating with the dynamic "Dancing with Eternal Glory/ Whirlwind (Reprise).
![]() After a short break, the band returns to what is the second DVD, which features more intricate and intense instrumentation and lyrics. The set was ambitious with the band running through the expansive "All of the Above", the insightful "We All Need Some Light", the daring "Duel With the Devil", a beguiling "Bridge Across Forever" and a stirring "Stranger in Your Soul." All this and the fans at Tilburg wanted more. The band complied with an unplanned version of Genesis' "Return of the Giant Hogweed." But more is never enough, so the DVD includes "stranger jams" that were filmed at other locations during the tour. The four extras demonstrate that Transatlantic are serious musicians but they have their silly moments. Each features Neal taking over the drum kit leaving Mike to create some sort of mischief. One night he crowd surfs, another Portnoy does a bass pedal solo that flows into "Smoke on the Water". In Switzerland , which happen to have a decibel meter in the theater Portnoy has the audience wave their hands and shout in an attempt to hit 115.
![]() "Among the best concerts I've ever played in my whole life" said Neal Morse referring to the Tilburg gig. More Never Is Enough Live @ Manchester & Tilburg 2010 (Radiant/Metal Blade) is a compete package of media and music. The concerts were magical and the 5 part Digipak is a fine addition to Transatlantic's canon and career!
