with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra! A SoundPress.net Feature Article by Pat Cacioppo When native New Yorker Paul O'Neill conceptualized the Trans-Siberian Orchestra 13 years ago, I wonder if he ever thought his "dream" would become the mind blowing reality that it is today!
![]() I had known of TSO for many years, especially hearing their progressive versions of Christmas classics on the radio and television during the holidays. Finally, in 2010 my brother and I decided to check out their Christmas show live - and, we were faithfully hooked!! We returned to Newark, New Jersey's Prudential Center on Thursday, December 22, 2011 for our second year of what we plan to make a holiday tradition; to see Trans-Siberian Orchestra's winter tour. We were not disappointed!!! A TSO show is an adrenaline overload of what could be called "rock theater" in layman's terms. I can say I have seen the top bands in the history of rock and roll. Not one of them can come close to the stage/light/pyrotechnic extravaganza of a TSO performance. They, without a doubt, have one of the best road and stage production crews in touring history. From minute one, you are transported to the peak of your senses.
![]() The first half of the NJ show was the usual Christmas tale. Brian Hicks, the narrator, leaves you clinging on every word with his beautiful booming voice. The highlight of the Christmas part of TSO's show for me is the deeply moving "old city bar", off of their "Songs of Winter" collection. This "song" tells a story of a young woman trying to get home for Christmas and the bartender who empties his cash register to help her. The woman is outside his bar on Christmas Eve in the cold and the snow, across the street at the pay phone.....how is the bartender aware of this woman? A "child" comes into the bar and tells him. As the story progresses, poignantly told by TSO's Ronny Monroe, you are led to believe the child is an angel sent from above. A beautiful tale of giving and the christmas symbolism, it brings tears to the eyes. The second half of the show this year, (I am extremely happy to report), showcased the bands top of the line skills. Every musician in the TSO line-up is at the top of their game, and their orchestration can be compared to a Queen and Iron Maiden offspring, in my opinion! Second half highlights were the use of the catwalks above the crowd, the sensational female singers/dancers being highlighted and the guitarists running through the floor aisles. Trans-Siberian orchestra puts on a 2-1/2 hour lavish display for the mind, body and spirit, and at the finale, you are left wanting more! This is a show that I would highly recommend for everyone, (the audience ranged from kids younger then 5 to seniors in their 80's.) It's a once in a lifetime experience, and I am giddy with anticipation for next year!!!
