Music and So Much More at Madame Tussauds: New York Wax Museum Is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

by Rich and Laura Lynch

Madame Tussauds situated in the heart of Times Square in NYC is so much more than just a wax museum!

Yes, the world-famous museum does have over 200 life like wax creations of celebrities, historical figures and other icons but the All Access Pass also includes Behind the Scenes, Cinema 4D and SCREAM. Behind the Scenes is an interactive exhibit, 4D combines the magic of 3D with extra special effects and SCREAM is a spooky walkway with live actors. And if that is not enough, they have Wii games and facilities for hosting a wide range of events from parties to product launches.

The Beatles were just four of the fabulous figures on display throughout the museum's three levels.

Madame Tussauds is located in a number of major cities including Hong Kong, London, Las Vegas and Sydney. The one in New York is at 234 West 42nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues. It is open 365 fun filled days a year. Picture taking and getting up close and personal with the wax figures is very much encouraged. Madame Tussauds is near many other NYC attractions that are listed on their website, thus one can plan a full day in the Big Apple with their trip to the museum.

80's Icons - Madonna, Bruce Springsteen and Michael Jackson.

On Sunday, February 26, 2012 we took an afternoon tour of Madame Tussauds in search of music icons and we found plenty. Since the earliest mode of music for the masses consisted of phonographic cylinders made out of wax it made sense to seek out the wax counterparts of our favorite musicians with mass appeal.

The tour started at a balcony overlooking a party. We descended the stairs to mingle with many well known celebrities. Leonardo Dicaprio and J-Lo were there along with Brad Pitt and his wife Angelina Jolie. Meryll Streep who later that night would win an Academy Award for best actress was present at this star studded celebration.

60's Standouts - Janice, Jimi, Jerry and Jim!

The first musician we spotted was Stevie Wonder. The Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin was surrounded by other legendary female singers such as Billie Holiday. We saw some Bollywood stars as we headed into a Federal style room. Political figures were gathered here. Presidents Washington, Lincoln and more current leaders including the tall Ronald Reagan were in attendance.

The Clintons - and the Obamas who were in the oval office - were available for photos. Pope John Paul II, the Dalai Lama and Billy Graham were there to bless visitors. Civil rights activists Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King were also present.

The Spirit of New York showcased famous celebrity figures from the tri-state area. Next we came to the mecca of music. Bono, Bruce Springsteen, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, Lenny Kravitz, Madonna and Michael Jackson were some of the many artists portrayed. Jazz greats including Glenn Miller and crooners like Frank Sinatra were also well-represented in the museum's ample assortment of figures.

The museum showcased the founding fathers and these founding fathers of rock!

After the 4D movie we were shepherded into another room where current music icons Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga were displayed. This flowed into Sports Zone, which had interactive displays and sports figures such as Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees and Eli Manning of the 2012 Super Bowl champion Giants.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Madame Tussauds with its wide range of musicians that are part of their growing collection. It is amazing how lifelike the figures are - thanks in part to their attention to small details. The museums showcases a wide range of interests and interactive displays that added to the fun!

Modern day female chart toppers Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood were looking hot in their wax renditions.
