It's All Good on Friday the 13th with Assembly of Dust at Mexicali Live

by Rich and Laura Lynch

It may have been Friday the 13th (August 2010) but it was all good for fans assembled at Mexicali Live in Teaneck, New Jersey. Anticipation was high in the intimate venue prior to Assembly of Dust (AOD) taking the stage by storm with the up-tempo "Sideways Train".

Reid Genauer has become a familiar fixture on the Mexicali Live stage over the years.

AOD is a hybrid of sounds and styles ranging from Americana folk, bluegrass, jam, roots and rock. Assembly of Dust are touring in support of their latest CD Some Assembly Required - released in 2009. The album is diverse and features an impressive list of dynamic guest players including Richie Havens, Mike Gordon (Phish) and David Grisman.

Assembly of Dust (AOD) was founded in 2002 by Reid Genauer and has performed at a number of major music festivals including Bonnaroo, Gathering of the Vibes and the Newport Folk Festival. Their first album was described as "1920's dust bowl kind of blue-collar Americana" whereas Some Assembly Required deals with more contemporary themes and textures. It is a spirited record with a serious undercurrent that weaves through many of the tracks, three of which were played at Mexicali Live.

Song two - "Love Junkie" featured a funky flow with many in the audience dancing to the good grooves. "Edges" from Some Assembly Required was enticing with colorful keys conferring with concise guitar chords. Musical conversations were often integrated into the jams with instruments countering each other and on other occasions melding into mesmerizing musical muses that kept the crowd moving.

"Bus Driver" traveled on fast lyrics and feisty instrumentation including a fiddle. "Honey Creeper" combined heavy eclectic guitar effects punctuated with bold bass and drum parts with lighter progressions mixed in. "Valhella" was heavenly with fans singing and swaying to the song. Both "Etta James" and "Sometimes" showcased expansive jamming.

The second set started with an atmospheric version of "Arc of the Sun" enhanced with unearthly guitar riffs. "Telling Sue" was a jaunty jam followed by a robust "Roads". "Pedal Down" was polished and danceable. "Tavern Walker" had the tempo and tone of travel accented with vocals and violin. "The Honest Hour" and "Truck Farm" featured intricate improvisation.

Adam Terrell added hot and tasty licks all show long.

The encore was "Filter" - a fusion of soaring guitar leads and smoldering rhythms. Assembly of Dust was laid back yet their music was energized and experimental. The crowd was engaged and in motion throughout both sets with some close enough to give complimentary beverages to the band.

Opening for Assembly of Dust was Luba Dvorak. Luba in black attire and armed with an acoustic guitar reminded us of a Dylan-Forbert-Springsteen-Cash combo with his earthy vocal style and enticing storytelling. Dvorak fronted an able group of players through an engaging nine song set. Luba's music was a blend of country and rock with the pedal steel playing a prominent role in his songs.

Dvorak was personable with some chat between catchy numbers that featured colorful jamming. Luba and his band finished with "San Diego" - a tune that blended sultry sounds with country twangs as the tale unfolded. Dvorak's latest CD is titled Under The Radar but he might be flying higher soon on the strength of his charisma and talent.
