Lukas Nelson and Kaitlin Butts Raise the Roof at Beloved BMI Bash in Nashville
by Rich and Laura Lynch
A day after celebrating the theme of rodeo music at the Grand Ole Opry, country stars Lukas Nelson and Kaitlin Butts were rounded up to play two hot sets at the much-loved "BMI Rooftop On The Row" on Wednesday, May 28, 2025. Now in its seventh spectacular season, the concert series held on top of the BMI building located at 10 Music Sq E on Music Row - is an invite only V.I.P. experience - with amazing vistas of the ever-changing Nashville skyline.
Lukas Nelson put his promising future on display in Nashville.
Opening the show was rising star - the sassy storyteller Kaitlin Butts - who was introduced as the pride of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Butts wasted no time engaging the packed rooftop with her sultry murder mystery "White River" before performing her hit "Roadrunner" that is really racking up the plays on the major streaming platforms. Her energetic cover of Kesha's "Hunt You Down" will probably never get an airing at the family-friendly Grand Ole Opry. During her well-received showcase Kaitlin put some of her own personal philosophy regarding toxic family relationships on display via the meaningful back to back combo of "Blood" and "You Ain't Gotta Die (to Be Dead to Me)" before boarding the "Sin Wagon" and turning the spotlight over to Lukas.
Kaitlin Butts was a sassy storyteller who you wouldn't want to cross in Music City.
Lukas Nelson has star quality in his DNA and his ample talent clearly doesn't fall far from the tree that his father Willie planted. It also doesn't hurt that Nelson's "Uncle Neil" is Neil Young who helped put his protege Lukas through musical boot camp when he hired Nelson's band Promise of the Real to back him for three years from 2015-2018. During that time Lukas was amassing quite a discography of his own releasing eight studio albums with P.O.T.R. through 2023's critically-acclaimed Stick and Stones.

Today, Lukas Nelson is set to achieve super-stardom as a singular singer-songwriter in his own right with the release of his first-ever solo album, American Romance, on June 20 via Sony Music Nashville to mark the start of his partnership with the label. At BMI, Lukas debuted several new tracks from the record including "Ain't Done", "Pretty Much", "Outsmarted", "Born Runnin' Outta Time" and the title track. Still, the best reception to Nelson's quality segment - which just may rank as our favorite moment yet in Music City - was reserved for the rockin' versions of P.O.T.R. fan favorites "Carolina" and "Find Yourself" which found Lukas and company rejoined by opener Butts to wind down the proceedings on a high note. The verdict is now in regarding the Lukas Nelson foray into solo territory - his future is promising, really very promising!

BMI's fantastic seventh season on their rooftop rolls on with Tucker Wetmore & Tanner Adell on July 15th and Vincent Mason & Max McNown on August 12 before wrapping up their calendar year with an Americana Fest Kickoff on September 9th. Of course, none of this would be possible without the generous sponsorship provided by George Dickel Whisky, Delta Air Lines, Fat Bottom Brewing Co., First Horizon, Gallagher Insurance, Red Bull Jukebox, Texas Roadhouse, White Claw, YETI, and Xperi - who all chip in to make sure that the "BMI Rooftop on the Row" remains the best regularly scheduled party in all of Nashville.
