Firefall and Pure Prairie League - Legends of Country Rock Ride On in Tarrytown

by Rich and Laura Lynch

Three pioneers of country rock shared the stage at the Tarrytown Music Hall in Tarrytown, New York on Friday March 1, 2013. The concert billed as the "Legends of Country Rock" featured POCO, Pure Prairie League and Firefall. All three bands have contributed to what is now known as country rock. Each group has had their share of line-up changes, hits and some career disappointments as musical landscapes have changed over the years. Yet, they all remain true to their roots and traditions.

Pure Prairie League's best-known hits were "Amie", "Falling In and Out of Love" and "Let Me Love You Tonight". They have maintained a strong following with fans coming to live shows to relish Pure Prairie League's unique brand of country rock. Firefall are also pioneers who added a dash of Americana, rock and roots to their music with their signature songs being "Just Remember I Love You", "Mexico " and " Strange Way".

Steven Weinmeister and Jock Bartley are the heart and soul of Firefall.

Firefall was the first of the three bands to take the stage. Friday they performed as a trio with two guitars, a bass and all three handling vocals. Since they had a limited amount of time Firefall played their most well known songs including "Just Remember I Love You" and "You Are The Woman." They encouraged fans to sing along and folks appeared to be enjoying the trip down memory lane.

Jock Bartley peppered his band's 30-minute set with several crisp and tasty licks.

Firefall ended their concise set with a singular "Strange Way" and a spicy and well seasoned "Mexico". After a quick set change, Pure Prairie League came on. They opened with "Kansas City Southerner" a song about travel with train tempos melding with country tones.

"What a beautiful place to play music," they stated as they segued into an energized "Early Morning Riser" followed by the reflective "Angel". "It's Not Love, But It's Not Bad" had country phrasing with the slide prominent in the mix. "I'll Fix Your Flat Tire, Merle" moved at a foot tapping pace with country flair.

Joking that they felt compelled to play the next song they performed the sweet "Let Me Love You Tonight" which was a definite crowd pleaser. The sensation and sentiments of movement prevailed in "Misery Train" and "Two Lane Highway" with both songs showcasing spirited instrumentation. Pure Prairie League closed their set with an animated "Amie" with fans clapping and singing along.

POCO was the only band that currently has a new album out so their show was a mix of classic and contemporary tracks from their catalogue whereas Firefall and Pure Prairie League performed their best known songs. The combination of the three legends of country of rock was a big draw and the audience appeared to enjoy all the bands and their songs that still speak to the heart.

The Tarrytown Music Hall is in the center of the town. It is a brick structure in the Queen Anne architectural style. It is the oldest theater in Westchester county and many great artists such as the legends of country rock have graced its stage. The venue has a friendly vibe and a wide range of comedians and musicians booked for 2013 including Sandra Bernhard, Demetri Martin, Al Jarreau, Cowboy Junkies, They Might Be Giants, Rickie Lee Jones and Al DiMeola.
