The Eric Burdon Band in New Jersey - Show Flows with a Rapid Stream of Classic Hits and Contemporary Songs

by Rich and Laura Lynch

Eric Burdon has been a mainstay in the music world since coming into fame with The Animals in the 1960's as part of the British Invasion. Later, Eric would lend his voice to the funk inspired WAR. Burdon has had a prolific career releasing almost 50 albums over 50 years. His most recent record - the blues based 'Til Your River Runs Dry - came out in early 2013 and proves that musical inspiration is still flowing through and from this legendary icon.

Eric who is also an author, a painter and a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer still tours regularly. His latest outing brought him to the bergenPAC in Englewood, New Jersey on October 22, 2013. Burdon with his very capable band presented a career spanning set of the Animals, WAR, the blues along with a number of new songs from 'Til Your River Runs Dry.

A six piece band took the stage to jam for a bit before Burdon strolled to the mike to start with "When I Was Young". Eric updated the lyrics to mention a number of musical greats. "Water" from the new record featured fluid instrumentation with the B3 floating throughout the mix. "Misunderstood" explored new Spanish territory with the bongos giving the piece a different feel. The sassy "Spill The Wine" was another fan favorite where folks could sing along to.

"Wait" from 'Til Your River Runs Dry simmered at a slower pace tying into the theme of the song that also featured a fine acoustic guitar solo. The newer "Old Habits Die Hard" was a reflective look at life with the band adding backing vocals. "Black Dog" had a darker vibe with its deep bottom end combined with bold fret work. The beguiling bass lines set the pace for "We Gotta Get Out of this Place". The band expanded on the piece with dueling guitars and Eric adding percussion to the mix. The song flowed into "River is Rising" that had a soulful feel amongst the build ups in the tune.

Burdon returned to his blues roots with a slithering version of John Lee Hooker's "Crawling King Snake". Eric paid tribute to another Eric with an engaging version of Clapton's "Before You Accuse Me". Sticking with the blues the band crafted a sassy Bo Diddley beat for "Bo Diddley Special" that showcased more fiery fret work from Burdon's two guitarists.

Burdon's band included two guitars and two percussionists for a wild, animalistic sound.

Eric closed the set with two signature tracks a lively "It's My Life" and a rousing "House of the Rising Sun". Their encore was the sassy "Boom Boom" with Burdon adding a few steamy lyrics as the band brought the show to a wild close. The Eric Burdon concert at the bergenPAC was a fine mix of hits and new material with Eric and his talented team tackling all with energy and enthusiasm.

Opening for Eric Burdon was Frankenstein 3000. They were a four piece rock band with perhaps an undercurrent of punk. They performed a succinct set of covers and originals. The highlight being a song called "Revolution". Apparently this stirring song of riffs and rhythms will be in a movie that is coming out in 2014. Frankenstein 3000 closed their set with an edgy version of The Cars' "Bye Bye Love".

The bergenPAC is centrally located among restaurants and shops in downtown Englewood, New Jersey. The theater continues to host a wide range of artists such as Eric Burdon. Upcoming events at the bergenPAC include Elvis Costello, Abba Mania, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Midori, Doktor Kaboom!, Michael Nesmith, Pat Benatar, Dave Davies, Southside Johnny, Aaron Neville and the Gin Blossoms.
