Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum Comes to the Brooklyn Bowl in Nashville

Fans arrived early at the Brooklyn Bowl in Nashville, Tennessee on July 28, 2022 in anticipation of a live performance by the group Princess Goes To The Butterfly Museum. The trio is comprised of actor, lyricist, musician and vocalist Michael C. Hall (Dexter, Six Feet Under, Hedwig and the Angry Inch), drummer Peter Yanowitz (The Wallflowers, Morningwood) and keyboardist Matt Katz-Bohen (Blondie). During the show Matt also played bass and guitar. Michael has won a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award while his band mates have worked with Natalie Merchant, Yoko Ono, Andrew W.K., Allen Ginsberg, Billy Bragg, Wilco, Boy George, Cyndi Lauper and more.

Michael C. Hall takes flight in Music City with Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum.

Since Hall is a well-known actor it was not surprising that he aptly handled the role of a charismatic lead singer who happens to have an expressive and wide range. At times, Michael conjured up Bono and Bowie in his presentation of rather heavy music while in other moments moving his body dramatically in tune within his own muse. Katz added an array of sounds as he switched from various effects and instruments throughout the night, while Yanowitz punctuated Michael's potent prose with a pounding, pulsing beat.

Their set at the Brooklyn Bowl focused on songs from their full-length debut album Thanks for Coming (2021).On the record, the trio provides a post-pandemic primer that is cinematic and daring in scope on 14-tracks of varying shades and hues that hover nearer the darker side of the spectrum. Their music manifests elements of classic glam rock with a dash of disco punctuated by contemporary electronic grooves. The band often alludes to their concept and imagining of the butterfly museum as being mostly a physical space that is entered during their performances or in the studio.

In Nashville, flashing and swirling lights added to the intensity of tunes such as "Angela Peacock", "Jet Pack", "Sideways", the tantalizing "Thanks For Coming" and the compelling "Come Talk To Me". In the live setting this band was hypnotic as heavy beats filled the room while Michael prowled the stage singing intriguing tunes like "Ketamine" with the alluring line "and if I could, I'd cut your static".

Matt Katz-Bohen and Peter Yanowitz round out the talented trio; a fan in Nashville.

Princess Goes To The Butterfly Museum presented a set that was daunting yet danceable. Their sound echoes of other influences yet is quite original with songs like "Cruel World" with its calm and chaotic movements reflective of a classical piece of music sans the strings that can be countered by a spacy-synth tune called "Bombed Out Sites". Founded in 2018, this band lost but is now regaining a buzz as things get back to "normal" - so check them out on screen or even better on stage.

"Eat. Drink. Rock. and Roll" is the Brooklyn Bowl's motto. Their outpost in Nashville at 925 3rd Avenue North has it all. Their restaurant serves up chicken, pizza, sandwiches and more. The dining room is inviting with bowling décor. The Brooklyn Bowl pours adult and soft beverages throughout the facility so one can quench their thirst during a live performance or while bowling. This location also has a patio that overlooks First Horizon Park where The Sounds - a minor league baseball team plays, so you can catch a few innings while at the Brooklyn Bowl.
