Country Star Josh Turner Returns to Belmont with a Big Christmas Show in Nashville
Country and gospel singer Josh Turner gave fans a concert packed with hits and holiday cheer at the Fisher Center in Nashville, Tennessee on December 08, 2022. Turner is currently on tour to present his latest album and abundant seasonal schwag for King Size Manger.
Josh Turner returned to his old stomping grounds in Nashville. Commenting on the record, Josh recalled that one of his most treasured childhood holiday memories was listening to Randy Travis' An Old Time Christmas back in Hannah, South Carolina. With that classic in mind, Turner wanted King Size Manger to be a collection of country versions of well-known Christmas songs mixed in with originals plus a bit of bluegrass, Hawaiian and swing. Turner has a deep, smooth voice well suited for country a genre that he has shown unwavering dedication to. Josh is also a dedicated Christian, so the combination of the two worked well for this holiday concert. During the first half of the Fisher show, Turner with his talented team played the hits, starting with an animated version of "All Over Me". Later, he had fans on their feet to clap along to a winning "Would You Go With Me" and a bit later "Why Don't We Just Dance" and "Your Man".
Josh Turner gave his fans a lot of options to put in their stockings and under their trees. Getting personal. Turner said he learned how to be a salesman through his life insurance dealing father explaining his proficiency at the public service announcements he delivered regarding the merchandise available in the lobby. Josh also mentioned that during the lockdowns he worked on a record that covered some of his favorite country songs, so we were treated to a blue-grassy take on "I Saw The Light" (Hank Williams) plus a convincing "Country State of Mind". For "Long Black Train" lights were used to give the allusion of a train coming out at us. After that song Josh shared that "Long Black Train" which launched his career was written when he was still a student here at Belmont. He commented on how much the campus has changed while joking that he got lost while showing his kids around. Turner also mentioned that he met his wife Jennifer in a class at this school. Lastly, he complimented the opening act TRIPP who he picked after asking Belmont students to submit videos. Josh received a lot of quality material and had a hard time choosing but TRIPP got the slot.
Josh Turner and his band were spread out over the large Fisher Center stage. TRIPPP is a trio of 21-year old brothers. Originally from Arkansas, they are currently based in Nashville where JD (lead vocals/drums) is a student at Belmont University majoring in Songwriting, Treyson (bass) is majoring in Biblical Studies at Belmont and Chaz (guitar) works for Gibson Guitars. The brothers were well-received and played a solid set of classics along with their own songs including the impressive "Moving On". After a short break, Josh and the band were back. During the second set we were introduced to the Turners. On a number of tunes, Jennifer played keys and sang. The couple have four musically inclined boys who added more fine instrumentation and vocals to the mix. Highlights of the holiday set included "Angels We Have Heard On High", the title track, "Joy To The World" and what Josh said was one of his personal favorites "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas". For us, the most moving piece was the "Soldier's Gift" with its stark imagery reminding us that many Americans sleep soundly at night because of the sacrifices of others. The Turners ended the night with the fun "Mele Kalikimaka My 'Ohana".
TRIPPP were impressive as they showed just why they won the contest to open the show. This was our first time seeing a show at the Fisher Center and dare we say this might become one of our favorite spots for live music. The architecture is stunning and a gigantic, lighted Christmas tree only added to the splendor of the entrance way. The concert hall is impressive and has good sight lines. There was also plenty of staff on hand to help patrons find their seats so as far as we could tell all things were running smoothly. The acoustically pleasing and well-appointed Fisher Center is located on the campus of Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. Dedicated in September 2021, this 1,727 seat, multi-functional venue has showcased a wide range of events including dance productions, musicals, operas, plays and mainstream artists such as Josh Turner. The staff told us that they are open and actively pursuing acts of all genres to play on its big stage making a king size Music City that much more royal in the process.
