Lyle Lovett's Big Show On The Hudson: That's Right Tarrytown - but Texas Wants You Anyway
Lyle Lovett and his Acoustic Group brought a little bit of Texas to the Tarrytown Music Hall in New York on July 21, 2013 with a show as generous and large as the great plains. The band is touring in support of Lyle's latest critically-acclaimed album Release Me released in 2012.
 Lyle Lovett on stage at the legendary Tarrytown Music Hall in July 2013. Lyle Lovett is an actor, a Grammy Award winner, guitarist, producer, singer and songwriter. Lyle's music is country based with shades of blues, blue-grass, folk, gospel, jazz and swing. Lovett was born and raised in Texas and his Lone Star State heritage often finds its way into his singular storytelling. The stage was dark as Lyle and his talented team took the stage to loud applause. Lovett shared a mike with Keith Sewell as the two sang "Up In Indiana". The foot tapping tune had a blue-grass flavor and allowed short, sweet solos from some of the band members. This set the tone for the evening which was about the group and not just the lead singer. Lyle Lovett and his Acoustic Group were polished in appearance and in presentation. They wore suites and were accomplished on their instruments. The second song of the set was " Garfield 's Blackberry Blossom" an animated jam from the band. Lyle was back in the mix for "Release Me" with Keith, Luke and Lyle's harmonies added to the sad tale of the title track. "Thank you very much," greeted Lovett. He introduced the band and jested that "I'm the guy who reads the newspaper over your shoulder." The tune "Here I Am" was a mix of humorous chat mixed into the chorus. Between songs Lyle talked and said that he admired Jesse Winchester which meandered into their feisty cover of Jesse's "Isn't That So". Lovett also commented that the Tarrytown Music Hall was a wonderful sounding room, which was the case Sunday night with all the instruments sounding crisp. With a nod to the Lone Star State the band performed the lively "The Truck Song" and a leisurely "Long Tall Texan". The theme continued with the country romance of "Texas Trilogy". "I Will Rise Up" was rousing moving from subtle to strong with harmonizing vocals giving the song even more soul. During the concert, Lovett mentioned and promoted his bandmate's solo projects. Luke Bulla took center stage to perform his "Temperance Reel". He picked the fiddle as he sang the funny lyrics about drinking going into full scale strumming. Later, Keith Sewell performed his impressive "Let Me Fall". "Fiona" flowed fast with Lyle holding out long vocal notes. Food also was a theme with the flavorful "Pantry" served up blue-grass style with the players around one mike and soloists stepping up. Quick succulent solos were also very much a part of the entire show. Everyone in Lyle's band has blue ribbon credentials and had opportunities to shine. Later, the gospel inspired "Church" kicked up the culinary theme again with humor and more satisfying solos. "She's No Lady" had a sultry feel and a sizzling stand up-bass solo from Viktor Krauss. Krauss with Russ Kunkel on drums were a formidable rhythm team. They ran the gamut from reflective to robust. The pair maintained the swing of "That's Right (You're Not From Texas)". The set closed with a colorful cover of Townes Van Zandt's "White Freightliner Blues". "Thanks for making us feel at home," said Lyle as they went into their encore that included more engaging interplay and solos. The Lyle Lovett and his Acoustic Group show was diverse demonstrating how Lyle's music has many textures along with its country tones. The show was also warm and generous by clocking in at over two and half hours with twenty-nine songs in the set. The band was tight and they brought a little bit of Texas to New York State The Tarrytown Music Hall has a long standing tradition in music and the arts. The historic theater is in the heart of the downtown surrounded by restaurants and shops. The venue has a full line up for 2013 and beyond, which includes John Hiatt, Justin Hayward, Todd Rundgren, Don Felder, Midtown Men, and Shelby Lynne with Alejandro Escovedo, Dianne Reeves, Graham Nash, Buddy Guy and Rufus Wainwright.
