Matthew Sweet Is the Cat's Meow at Nashville Sunday Night Live Radio Broadcast From 3rd & Lindsley

by Rich and Laura Lynch

Matthew Sweet was the special featured artist on Lightning 100's "Nashville Sunday Night" radio program that was broadcast around the world from 3rd & Lindsley on September 01, 2024 from Music City - Nashville, Tennessee. Sweet's well attended performance was part of the independent station's critically acclaimed weekly concert series that also stands as their longest running production.

Matthew Sweet on the radio in Nashville.

Matthew Sweet grew up in Nebraska. He moved to Georgia in the 1980's to attend college. Sweet immersed himself in Athens alternative music scene where he perfected his craft. Matthew's next move to New York City led to deals with major labels but it would be 1991's Girlfriend that spawned his tremenedous commercial success.

A project with Bangles frontwoman Susanna Hoffs to record a series of covers from the '60s, '70s and '80s was also successful. Sweet's music has appeared in numerous films, games and television shows including Austin Powers, Guitar Hero II, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Simpsons, Scooby-Doo and more.

Matthew Sweet fronted a five piece that featured Debbi Peterson of The Bangles on drums.

Matthew with his talented band that included Debbi Peterson (The Bangles) on drums were warmly welcomed as they promptly took the stage at 8 pm. A multiple guitar attack was utilized on the edgy "The Ugly Truth" while a steady groove moved through "I Wanted to Tell You". Other moving moments of the set included a divine "Divine Intervention" along with "Devil With the Green Eyes" followed by the moody "You Don't Love Me". The radio portion ended at nine so the last three songs of the night would be considered the encore which included the popular "Stars Explode", "Girlfriend" before closing with the revealing and pained "Sick of Myself".

During the concert, Matthew mentioned his love of creating cat art. Some fans may have already known this as his Catspaw (2021) album cover art features a yawning black feline that was inspired by the classic "Star Trek" episode of the same name in which Capt. Kirk is terrorized by a giant tabby.

We love that Matthew Sweet loves cats - we do too!

Per Sweet's website Catspaw is the confessions of a career artist, mature and assured in his craft and achingly transparent in his confrontations of aging and the search for meaning. Sweet's handiwork was featured on Debbi's drum head and that image was on Michael's tour tee shirts. Thus, Sweet is not only a musician but a visual artist who sculpts and paints cats when not crafting compelling musical compositions.

Interestingly, the opening act Abe Partridge from Mobile, Alabama also works in multiple mediums. When Partridge is not writing or touring, he is creating art. His paintings, primarily acrylic on tarred board and watercolors can be seen in galleries around the southeast and in the private collections of celebrities.

Abe Partridge was a presence hard to ignore in the coveted opening slot at 3rd & Lindsley.

At 3rd & Lindsley Abe was backed by a blue-grass like configuration but his unique style was hard to categorize. Partridge's prose was hard hitting, witty and sometimes weird with religious imagery and conspiratorial themes woven into his observations. His opinion of Nashville as revealed in "Gnashville with a G" was comical yet touched on quite a few truths that struck a chord with the hometown crowd.

Abe covered a wide range of topics such as the world falling apart and Willie Nelson's issues with the IRS with "Ride Willie Ride". Abe with his able team delivered an innovative set as did Mr. Sweet for another fine edition of Lightning 100's "Nashville Sunday Night" show.

3rd & Lindsley remains unique and inviting among Music City's many listening rooms.
