Marco Benevento Kicks Off a Big Weekend in New Jersey

by Rich and Laura Lynch

It was a weekend where all eyes were descending on Bergen County, New Jersey as the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos were gearing up to face off at MetLife Stadium in Super Bowl XLVIII. The magical keyboardist Marco Benevento kicked off the weekend in celebratory fashion with a stunning two halves of innovative and inventive music when he and his trio took the stage at Mexicali Live in Teaneck, New Jersey on January 31, 2014.

You could surmise that Benevento might be a disgruntled Bengals fan since he has been on the road since 2012 in support of his breakthrough fourth album, TigerFace. On this 10-track record Marco utilized acoustic pianos, analog keyboards and synths to craft a sonic spectrum of sounds. Benevento also has plans to return to the studio to work on his next album with producer Richard Swift. This project will see the New Jersey native tackle new ground as the songs promise to blend instrumental piano rock with Benevento's own vocals for the first time.

Marco has plenty of collaborations and original compositions to his credit. He is well respected in many circles including indie, jam and jazz. He and his team scored early and often with their energized live show that showcased his magical muse with a powerful playbook presented on his road tested upright piano.

Soon after nine, Marco casually dressed took his place at the piano playing a classy composition on his well worn, painted instrument. Subtly the mood changed becoming more whimsical as the bass and drums blended into the muse. Lights were flickering in time to the piano parts that consisted of traditional textures along with some tinkering with spacey sound effects.

The first song set the tone for an enchanting evening of experimental music. The mainly instrumental tunes had riveting rhythms that kept the Mexicali crowd on the move. Marco was potent on piano adding pizzazz to his tunes with layers and loops as Andy Borger (drums) with Dave Dreiwitz (bass) provided beguiling danceable beats.

"Yeah, Jersey," greeted Benevento. He asked his fans to count after him as the band flowed into another feisty instrumental. At this point Marco like a spirited child was toying with some of his other musical tools. He appeared to be focused and having fun. Benevento was often smiling or playing with his eyes closed, enjoying the transcendent moment which translated to his fans.

Marco performed two sets of music casting a spell with songs from TigerFace. The lively "Limbs of a Pine" was a high point with its catchy rhythms combined with colorful soundscapes. Benevento mentioned that he was working on his next record. He offered as proof several new tracks that melded vocalizations with vibrant instrumentation.

In addition to his own tunes Marco meandered in and out of covers. Their spin on "Walk Like An Egyptian" took the pop hit to a new level with cascading keys. Later one of their jams turned into "So Glad We Made It" before taking a few more musical twists. Marco Benevento also had an air of mystery about him as his compositions moved through many changes. Yet, he was consistently engaging. Fans danced all night, enjoying the good grooves and good vibrations of Marco's magical muse.
